How to Spy on Competitor App Keywords Without Copying Blindly

Analyze competitor app keywords, identify relevant gaps, and turn their ranking footprint into evidence for your own ASO strategy.

Competitor keyword research is useful because it reveals the language a store already connects with products in your market. It becomes dangerous when it turns into copying: a competitor may serve a different audience, offer different features, or rank because of brand strength you do not share.

A good competitor review asks which relevant terms they own, which terms neither app owns well, and where your product has a credible advantage.

Choose comparable competitors

Start with apps that solve the same job for a similar audience. Add one aspirational category leader and one smaller peer, but do not fill the set with famous apps whose brand demand overwhelms the comparison.

Resolve the exact store listing and country for every app. Cross-store or cross-country comparisons can manufacture gaps that are only data mismatches.

Separate shared terms, their strengths, and true gaps

Shared terms show the market vocabulary both listings already communicate. Competitor-only terms can reveal missing language or missing product capabilities. Your-only terms may represent differentiation worth defending.

A gap is actionable only when your app satisfies the query. If a competitor ranks for meal planning because it includes recipes and your app does not, adding the phrase is not optimization—it is a relevance problem.

Score gaps by fit, demand, and attainability

Product fit comes first. Then consider modeled demand, current competitor strength, and your existing related rankings. A modest-demand phrase strongly aligned with the app can outperform a broad term dominated by established brands.

  • High fit + attainable competition: test first.
  • High fit + difficult competition: build relevance and monitor.
  • Low fit + high demand: ignore until the product genuinely changes.
  • Unknown fit: validate with user language and conversion research.

Turn the research into a controlled experiment

Select one coherent cluster, decide which metadata and creative elements should reinforce it, and annotate the release. Track the cluster rather than declaring success from one keyword.

Competitor research should improve positioning as well as rankings. If every listing uses the same generic promise, the opportunity may be clearer differentiation rather than another repeated phrase.

Put it into practice

Start with a competitor’s real footprint

Search a tracked competitor, inspect its ranking keywords, then use the gap tool to compare the terms that matter.

Frequently asked questions

What is app keyword spying?

App keyword spying is the analysis of keywords a competing app ranks for so you can identify shared market language, competitor strengths, and relevant gaps for your own listing.

Should I copy a competitor’s app keywords?

No. Use competitor keywords as research inputs. Target only phrases that accurately match your product, audience, storefront, and positioning.

How many competitors should I compare?

A small deliberate set is usually enough: a few close substitutes, one strong category leader, and perhaps one similarly sized peer. Quality of comparison matters more than count.
